Industrial gas turbines have used heat-recovery steam generators since the 1990s. Bluebox does the same idea at a scale steam cannot reach.

Combined cycles have been used in large power generation since the 90s: an industrial gas turbine, then a heat-recovery steam generator and a steam turbine, usually fired by natural gas.

Bluebox has developed a combined-cycle approach using hot air turbines followed by an organic Rankine cycle. Efficiencies as high as 27.5% are reachable for plant in the 2 MWe class — much smaller than steam-turbine systems.

If heat is not needed on site and more power is required, an ORC can be added to almost double generation. At Taylors Farm, when the bean roaster is idle, heat is redirected to an ORC for extra electricity.
